The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) announced on Monday that it has launched a project for prospective grant beneficiaries who can henceforth use an online application portal to complete their applications.
The project covers applications for child support, support for older people and grants for foster children. Applications for the grants can be found at the following link: https://services.sassa.gov.za.
The portal can be visited and used via a computer and even a mobile phone.
According to Sassa, the turnaround time for an application to be approved is approximately 10 days provided that all necessary documentation has been attached. This documentation consists of the identity document and bank details of the applicant and his or her spouse.
The portal also provides for online submissions of the required supporting documentation that must accompany the application. Furthermore, any changes regarding payment method, banking details and address, as well as the status of the application can be made and checked online.
According to Sassa, this portal should make service delivery to applicants easier and faster, as it will save them the time and inconvenience of queuing at Sassa offices to apply for their grants, or report changes to their details.
“The added benefit is the convenience of the online portal that eliminates the risk of Covid-19 infection because it is not necessary to gather at public places to apply.”
People who want to use the online portal need an email address to register and sign in. People who do not have an e-mail address will receive feedback from Sassa via SMS.
It is important that persons applying for the online portal first have all documentation certified by a commissioner of oaths before it is submitted.
Testing of the system will run from 14 September until 25 September 2020.
