Solidarity and the Solidarity School Support Centre (SSC) today sent a comprehensive memorandum to the cabinet where they convincingly show with the help of international research why schools should not close.
“Research shows that it is not in the interest of children, the larger economy or even the fight against the spread of the virus to close schools. The damage is especially in poorer communities,” said Dr. Dirk Hermann, CEO of Solidarity said
Solidarity further argues that a more nuanced approach is essential in assessing whether or not schools should remain open.
“Simple open or closed arguments cannot work. Schools have to make decisions according to their unique circumstances. The virus will be with us for a long time to come and we must learn to live responsibly with it,” Hermann concludes.
