Solidarity has by far the largest law department of all trade unions in South Africa.
A cardinal element of job protection is capable and effective representation during internal grievances and disciplinary hearings.
At present, Solidarity members within the SAPS are denied representation during disciplinary hearings, even in circumstances where Solidarity is their trade union of choice to represent them during internal grievances and disciplinary hearings.
Such representation is a material interest that is not being addressed by the existing unions, POPCRU and SAPU, even though Solidarity members are paying agency fees and have to be content with being represented by unions that are not their first choice and that in some circumstances are acting against their interests in concluding collective agreements.
Solidarity therefore has a material interest in on behalf of whom it acts when representing members in disciplinary hearings and internal grievances, and assists such members with the necessary advice when going through the internal processes.
